Over 200 Socialist, Communist, Green, & Anarchist Organisations Opposed Saturday's Airstrikes In Syria (FULL LIST)
Over 200 socialist, communist, green, social-democratic and labour parties and organisations from 93 countries with a combined membership of over 150 million people have condemned or spoken out against Saturday's attack on Syria by the United States, the United Kingdom, France, and Israel, according to statements posted on the websites of the parties or their parent organizations involved.
The parties come from a wide swath of the ideological spectrum, from the most reformist to the most revolutionary, and from all continents bar Antarctica. Although they obviously have wide differences in policy- nobody can say the Chinese Communist Party has the same perspective as the Green Party of England and Wales, or the Popular Front for The Liberation of Palestine, the commitment of so many left-wing political organisations to anti-imperialist principles or at the least basic international law is a sign that left unity is not only possible, but necessary on the issue of opposing a potential Third World War.
On the eve of the First World War, most members of the Socialist International, as well as some scattered, albeit notable, anarchists, including Peter Kropotkin, supported the capitalist carve-up. Today, although it may not look like it from the fratricidal sectarianism of the left- particularly the war between anarchists and Marxist-Leninists, most left-wing organizations back Syria or at least regret the intervention of Donald Trump, Theresa May and Emmanuel Macron, who are now, according the Charter of the United Nations as well as their own constitutions (written or unwritten) international criminals of the first order.
While many of the parties listed below did not release individual statements on the Syrian strikes, their parent organisations made sure to speak out.
In addition to the parties listed below, the International League of People's Struggles, founded by 218 organizations opposing imperialism from 40 countries, slammed the attacks on their website. Major anarchist media outlets and collectives such as Indymedia, Enough is Enough!, Crimethinc, and It's Going Down, whatever their previous stances, also spoke against the war.
All major Palestinian factions, including Fatah, the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine, and Hamas (not listed below), wrote statements in condemnation of the aggression of the three western colonial powers.
The international political organisation founded by Yanis Varoufakis, DiEM25, strongly condemned the action as "cowardly, ineffectual, and militaristic." DiEM has branches in every EU member state, and has also recently called on the government of Ecuador to restore the internet connection of Julian Assange.
The Party of European Socialists, with 58 member organisations, stressed its commitment to peace and the UN-led effort to end the alleged use of chemical weapons in the region, although it did not speak against Saturday's attacks.
A by no means complete list of political parties opposing the Syrian intervention can be found below. If you know of any organization or party not listed, you can comment below or DM @CivicCritic at Twitter.
