Why Is Palestine Part Of The NATO Parliamentary Assembly?

The Palestine National Council, an Abbas-controlled conciliatory organisation recently boycotted by many Palestinian factions for failing to represent the Palestinian people, has maintained membership in an obscure branch of NATO known as the Parliamentary Assembly amid Israeli collaboration with the Atlantic alliance in illegal wars against Arab people.

Currently, two members of the PNC sit as observers in the 266-seat Assembly, alongside nations like Erdogan's Turkey (given 18 seats) and Netanyahu's occupation government.

The NATO Parliamentary Assembly has no real legislative power over international policies, let alone the decisions of NATO countries to go to war, and members are not directly elected by the citizens in member countries.

The Assembly does, however, come together every year to discuss "the transatlantic link," in an event sponsored by the Atlantic Council, a think-tank funded by reactionary Gulf monarchies, weapons companies that sell billions of dollars worth of lethal arms to Israel for the repression of Gaza, and the US State Department.

The organisation also considers Hamas and Hezbollah to be "terrorist organisations," and has argued for further capitulation of Abbas and the Fatah party to US demands, including the notorious and ill-defined "Ultimate Deal" pursued by the Trump administration.

In recent months alone, NATO's Parliamentary Assembly has recognised Saudi Arabia, a notoriously repressive monarch in an alliance with Israel and other imperialist Arab states against Syria and Iran, as a "vital" force for regional security against "terrorism," and held a forum on the shopworn "peace process" chaired by Turkey, which has attacked Syria and thus further destabilised a major sponsor of Palestinian organisations like the PFLP, which the Council also sees as terrorist organisation.

Two days ago, IDF paratroopers officially participated in the "Saber Strike 18" military exercises alongside NATO. Israel is increasingly intertwined with the Atlantic alliance, with members such as France, Germany, and the USA selling high-tech weaponry to the IDF and Israeli police to kill Palestinians.

The PNC's participation on the NATO Parliamentary Assembly is the perfect symbol of Mohammad Abbas's cowardly and cringing leadership as the face of the Palestinian resistance movement. His successor will have to decide whether or not two token seats are worth participation in this anti-Palestinian, pro-Israeli organisation that actively works against the interests of Arab peoples.
